Summer reading challenge:
Take part in a summer reading challenge by heading down to your local library.The Summer Reading Challenge combines FREE access to books with fun, creative activities in the library
during the summer holidays. Throughout the Challenge, library staff and teenage volunteers support the
children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of books and ways of reading.
How the Challenge works
- Children sign up at their local library and receive The Animal Agents collector folder
- Children borrow and read at least six library books of their own choice during the summer, collecting
special cards to complete their folder and rewards along the way
- Library staff and teenage volunteers are on hand to advise and run family-friendly activities
- Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge are presented with a certificate and a medal

Year 1 Letters and Latest news SUMMER 1
Sports day will be held on Friday 26th May. Please make sure your child wears the colour of their team.
Sports week - talk for eating:
Whiston will be taking part in a sports week the week commencing 22.05.17. This will include several fun activities for children to complete, including tasting healthy foods. A letter went out providing more information on this on Wednesday 17th May. Please can the return slip be returned to school by Monday 22nd May.
Please find below an attached link for activities for responding to Year 1. These activities will support your child with their reading and understanding what they have read.
As you will be aware the year 1 phonics screening test will be taking place soon. If you have any queries about it please see Miss Burgin. Below you will find a letter to tell you more information.
Class photographs are now avaliable to purchase please make sure you send the payment back to school as soon as poosible.
In order to ensure that your child has a school dinner, please order them online before your child comes to school in a morning.
Year 1 letters and latest news!
Dance Performance: Parents are invited to our dance performance on Thursday 16th February at 2.30pm. The children are required to wear an outfit.
If your child is a:
- Lion: yellow or orange clothes
- Monkey:brown clothes
- Bird: blue clothes
Safer Internet Workshop:
If you would like to attend the safer internet workshop on Wednesday 8th February please make sure you return the slip on the bottom of newsletter no. 08.
Currently (01.02.17) We have no returned slips in Year 1.
Education City: Home licences have now been activated for home use. It is the same username and password as initially given.
Cannon Hall Farm: Year 1 will be visiting Cannon Hall farm on Friday 10th March, a letter with all the information on went out on Wednesday 25th January. Please click the link below for the letter.
Maths is fun!: Thank you for coming to the FS2 and Year 1 maths workshop, we really hope you enjoyed the session. Below are the links from the workshop.
Maths is fun!: Wednesday 25th January we will be holding a Maths is fun workshop. There are two times that you can attend. The first session is 4.30pm - 5.10pm and the second session is 5.20pm - 6.00pm. If you are wanting to attend please sign up and return your slip. Please find attached below the resources used during the session.
Whiston's Got Talent: If your child has been selected to go through to the semi-finals of Whiston's got talent you will have received a letter. Best of luck to all of you!
Home learning: Each child will now get spellings and maths home learning as well as their creative home learning projects.
Bug Club: Please remember to log onto your bug club account to access your reading books. On bug club there is also content available for Maths and Spellings, please try to complete these.
Whiston's Got Talent: Children are invited to sign up for and audition for Whiston's got talent. Children will be able to sign up on Monday 9th January and auditions will take place later on in the week. Time to show off our talents!
School Meals: Remember that you can now book your dinners online using your personal login details. If you require more information about this please contact the school office.
Nativity: Children have now been given their speaking parts for the play, please practice these at home.
FS2 and Year 1 will be holding their Christmas Nativity production on Thursday 8th Decemeber. There will be 2 showings. One at 10am and the other at 2.30pm.
Passport to Learning: Attached below are 2 documents providing information about pupil passports. As a school we have introduced passports for each year, these are slowly being introduced to the children when we feel they are ready. Please be aware that the targets in these booklets are targets for the end of the year and are skills that the children will be working towards throughout the year.
Reading Reward: Below is the information regarding the reading reward bookmarks sent home to encourage reading at home.

Harvest Festival: The KS1 Harvest Festival is on Wednesday 12th October, below is a letter attached with more information.
KS1 Flu Vaccinations: Flu vaccinations for KS1 will be held in the afternoon on Tuesday 4th October.
Fairy tale day: Monday 3rd October. We are holding a Fairy Tale Day in Year 1 and lots of magical and exciting things will be happening. Please can children come dressed as their favourite fairy tale character.
Walk around Whiston:
On Tuesday 27th September Year 1 will be going on a local visit. As part of our topic we will be walking around Whiston and exploring our local area. Please ensure your child wears suitable clothing and footwear.
