Autumn 1

Welcome to year 4!  We hope you all had a wonderful summer and are full of energy and enthusiasm for our learning.

This half term we will be exploring the topic of coasts and linking this to our transition topic of the world of work by answering the question ‘What is it like to live and work at the coast?’ During our trip to Flamborough on the 9th October, as Geographers, we will be using maps to find our way around, exploring the erosion of the cliffs and looking at the impact pollution can have on the environment, whilst as Scientists we will investigating what types of creatures we can find in a coastal habitat and deciding what is a predator and what is prey for these creatures.  As Artists and Designers we will be creating a wide range of images using a variety of techniques and materials.

Within our computing curriculum, not only will we be researching our topic and using our word processing and database skills to present our information.  We will also be covering E-Safety and  a range of new applications which will enhance our learning . As Readers & Writers we will be exploring the picture book Flotsam by David Wiesner and using descriptive and figurative language, drama and our imaginations to discover the details and delights of this wordless book, we will also be studying the book.

As Mathematicians we will be securing our knowledge of place value and exploring a range of strategies and activities to help us learn our times tables.

After half term we will be aiming to answer the question—Does money make the world go round? - during which we will be undertaking an enterprise project which will be raise funds towards the cost of our residential to York in the summer.

Should you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to discuss these with me.

This half term our PE day will be Tuesday where a specialist from Rotherham hockey club will be developing our skills of hockey. We will be starting swimming on Thursday of the second week in school which will continue for 12 weeks at Maltby Leisure Centre.

To ensure your child takes part in all our physical activities, please could you ensure your child has a suitable outdoor PE kit including sturdy trainers (not just black pumps) and if your child is unable to remove their own earrings, please could these be removed at home on these days.   Each Thursday, your child will need to bring a swimming bag containing a swimming costume or trunks; a bath towel; a swimming cap, goggles are optional, however, not advised unless for medical reasons, eg. Prescription goggles.

Our SEAL topic is New Beginnings and Friendships, through which we will be learning to develop empathy and also understand and manage our emotions.

We continue to be fortunate enough to have a variety of specialist teachers coming in to teach us Music and French.

As avid readers we have chosen the book, The Wreck of the Zanzibar as our class story, we hope the children will love listening to this captivating tale by Michael Morpurgo.

You will have already received a copy of the homework menu for this half term, we hope you enjoy choosing a range of activities with your child.
